SEMINAR CLASS 2 (6 HOURS)

Theme:

1.     History of Ukrainian medicine. – 2 hours

2.     Medicine of the New Time. – 2 hours

3.     20th century medicine. Contemporary medicine and health protection in Ukraine. – 2 hours

 

Professional motivation: Study of the development of medicine in Ukraine from the ancient times till the 19th century lets us define its basic laws and achievements which influenced the development of world medicine.

 

Students’ self-study program:

Theme 1. History of Ukrainian medicine.

1. Basic sources for studying medicine of Ukraine from oldest times till the 20th century

2. Ukrainian folk doctors: magus, spiritualists, clairvoyants.

3. Medicine of the Scythians.

4. Monastery medicine: means and methods are treatments, renowned doctors of the time (Alipiy Ikonnyk, Damian, Gryigoriy Chudotvorets and others).

5. Agapit Pecherskyy, the prominent Ukrainian doctor.

6. Worldly medicine: specialization of artisans, methods and means of treatment.

7. Evpraksiya-Zoya and her treatise “Ointments”.

8. Zamoysk academy.

9. Georgiy Drogobych-Kotermak, the first doctor of medicine.

10. Kyiv-Mohyla academy and its renowned graduates.

11. Workshop medicine in Ukraine.

12. Fraternities and their importance for the development of education and medicine in Ukraine.

13. Military medicine of Zaporizhska Sich.

14. Epidemic illnesses, methods of curing them.

1.     Development of fundamental sciences in the 18–19th centuries

2.     Development of anatomy (Albinus, F. Ruish).

3.     Origin of pathological anatomy (Giovanni Morganio, Ksavie Bish, Charles Rokitanski, Rudolf Virhov).

4.     Development of physiology (Johannes Muller, Claude Bernard, Francois Majandi, Ivan Sechenov, Ivan Pavlov).

5.     Formation of microbiology: empiric and experimental periods.

6.     Development of clinical medicine. Leyden university, Herman Burgave.

7.     Discovery of new methods of inspecting patients.

8.     Development of surgery. Mykola Pirogov.

9.     Appearance of anaesthetics.

10.           Basic sources for studying medicine of Ukraine from oldest times till the 20th century

 

 

Theme 3. 20th century medicine. Contemporary medicine and health protection in Ukraine.

1.     Differentiation and integration of sciences in 20th century

2.     Military medicine in 20th century

3.     New medications and methods of diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of diseases.

4.     Medical education in Ukraine of the end of 19th – 20th century

5.     Totalitarian repression against Ukrainiaational medicine.

6.     Development of Ukrainian soviet medicine.

7.     Basic directions and achievements of development of experimental, clinical and prophylactic medicine, and organization of health protection in the 20th century Ukraine

8.     Public medicine.

 

Students must be able to: Explain the influence of Renaissance outlook on medical science and practice.

Use the basic literature for studying history of medicine in order to objectively estimate the state of medicare on the territory of Ukraine from the oldest times till the 19th century.

Estimate positive changes in scientific and practical medicine of the 18th–19th centuries.
