Corequisite:

SNURS 302 is focused on the basic and clinical concepts of pharmacology iursing practice.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of drug therapy are discussed in order to provide a basic understanding of the client’s reaction to a drug both therapeutically and adversely, and to predict potential drug interactions. Internal and external environmental factors affecting drug therapy are assessed in order to provide a comprehensive database for therapeutic nursing interventions. Specific prototypes of selected drug classifications provide the framework for understanding the action, use, side effects and nursing implications of drugs. The nurse’s role in drug administration, assessment of drug effects, and client system education are emphasized. Legal and ethical responsibilities for administering drugs are considered.

II.      CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

III.     COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

·         Describe the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of drugs.
Incorporate internal and external environmental factors affecting drug therapy into clinical decision-making.

·         Identify classifications of drugs and prototypes within those classifications, including their action, use, and side effects.

·         Discuss the nurse’s role in administering medications including ethical and legal implications.

·        Explain the nurse’s responsibility for evaluating the client’s reaction to drug therapy including the economic and life style changes affecting the client system.

·        Articulate a plan of education for the client and client system regarding drug therapy.

IV.     METHODS OF INSTRUCTION

Lecture and discussion, group work, assigned readings, audiovisuals, handouts, reference materials, critical thinking exercises, other written assignments, tests, internet resources, and others TBA.

V.      STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES (refer to ADNStudent Handbook)

VI.     COURSE REQUIREMENTS

A.      Assignments:

1.     5 Unit Tests……………………………………………………………40%

2.     Student participation ………………………………………………….5 %

3.     Final Examination……………………………………………………………………..55%

All tests must be taken on the assigned date unless the faculty member approves a delay in testing in advance. Such a change will only be approved for illness, family crisis, etc. and it is expected that the student will contact the faculty member prior to the examination. If a student is excused from an exam, a make-up test will be given; this make-up test may be essay or oral examination instead of the usual format. Students who are unexcused will receive a grade of 0% for that test. All testing employs an honor system in relation to personal integrity. Failed tests must be making up. Possible tasks for test: MPC, short-answers to the questions, essay, questions for critical thinking and application, etc. Final examination includes oral and writing parts. Final grade includes 5 unit tests result- 40%, participation -5%, writing part of exam –25%, oral answer-30%.
