- Identify clients at risk for development of pulmonary embolism.
- Describe the clinical manifestations of pulmonary embolism.
- Use laboratory data and clinical manifestations to determine the presence of acidosis.
- Compare and contrast the ventilation-perfusion ratios for respiratory failure of ventilatory origin and respiratory failure of oxygenation origin.
- Distinguish betweeormal and abnormal pulmonary capillary wedge pressure readings.
- Use laboratory data and clinical manifestations to determine the adequacy of ventilatory interventions.
- Describe the indications for intubation.
- Prioritize nursing care for the conscious client being mechanically ventilated.
- Identify clients at risk for development of pneumothorax.

- Recognize the risks older adults on ventilators face.
