NURS 205P: MENTAL HEALTH NURSING

Methodical Instruction

for

CLINICAL LAB #11 (2 hours)

 

 

Theme: The nurse as manager of care and member of the discipline in working      

           with patients with altered mood states  

 

Instructor: Dr. Lyubov Milevska - Vovchuk, BSN, MD.

 

 

STUDENT OBJECTIVES:

 

 

1.         Define affective disorders and distinguish them according to diagnostic        categories.

2.         Discuss the biological, psychosocial, and cognitive etiologic factors associated            

          with mood disorders.

3.         Describe the relationship of developmental needs and vulnerability to depression.

4.         Explain the purpose and methodology of diagnostic tests used in working with

         patients with altered mood states.

5.         Contrast symptomatic behaviors and typical assessment findings of the depressed patient vs. the elated/overactive patient.

6.         Develop nursing care plans for the depressed patient and the elated/overactive           

patient.

7.         Identify interventions the nurse uses as provider of care in meeting the following

human needs interferences of depressed/elated patients: physiologic, safety and

          security, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self actualization.

8.         Describe the role of the nurse as manager of care and member of the discipline

          in working with patients with altered mood states.         

  9.       Discuss the effects, side effects, patient teaching and nursing implications related         

to antidepressant medications, antimanic medications, and electroconvulsive

          therapy.

 10.      Discuss the following as they related to suicide: myths, psychodynamics, groups

            at risk, behavioral clues, and nursing interventions.

11.       Describe factors contributing to therapeutic interpersonal relationships with     

depressed, elated and/or suicidal patients.

12.       Discuss after care needs relative to family and hospital staff when a patient                              suicides.

13.       Discuss prevention of suicide in the community.

14.       Describe behaviors indicative of depression in children and adolescents.

15.       Discuss factors that should be considered when children/adolescents experience         

          the death of a significant person.

16.       Develop nursing care plans for children or adolescents with needs interferences

          related to depression/suicidal ideation.
