I.         COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

2 hrs lecture per 2 weeks (for 16 week semester: Jan 25 – May 12)

US Credit hours: 2

Students are introduced to the professional roles and responsibilities of the registered nurse.  Educational and professional development for registered nursing, legal and ethical issues related to nursing practice and contemporary political-socioeconomic influences affecting nursing practice and healthcare are addressed.  These concepts provide the foundation for registered nursing practice.

III.      COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

Upon satisfactory completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe historical perspectives and current influences on the development of nursing as a profession. (Academic Outcomes: critical thinking)

 

  1. Contrast and compare the types of educational preparation for nursing, including the various modalities for continued educational growth. (Academic Outcomes: critical thinking, information literacy)

 

  1. Describe the historical and contemporary political-socioeconomic influence on nursing practice and health care delivery. (Academic Outcomes: critical thinking, culture and society)

 

  1. Describe how the Nurse Practice Act, standards of care, and agency policies and procedures affect the scope of nursing practice. (Academic Outcomes: critical thinking)

 

  1. Delineate the elements of malpractice by recognizing the nurse’s legal responsibilities. (Academic Outcomes: critical thinking)

 

  1. Discuss common ethical issues encountered in nursing practice. (Academic Outcomes: critical thinking, information literacy)

 

  1. Compare and contrast models for ethical decision-making and apply their precepts to contemporary ethical issues encountered in nursing. (Academic Outcomes: critical thinking, communication)

 

  1. Discuss the implications of the American Nurses Association and International Council of Nurses Codes of Ethics on the practice of nursing. (Academic Outcomes: critical thinking)

Students are expected to abide the policies in the student handbook. All assigned work is to be completed on an individual basis. Students should not consult with other students. Any violations will be handled according to the policies identified earlier. Please recognize that infringements may cause you to be dismissed from the program.

  1. All cell phones and pagers must be silenced during class.
  2. All assignments are to be submitted on time.  Assignments submitted late may not be accepted for grading unless prior arrangement with the instructor has been made.
  3. It is expected that students will complete assigned reading prior to class.
  4. Attendance is required for all classes. Missed classes should be remade within 2 next weeks.
