2 hrs lecture per week (for 15 week semester: Jan 28 – May 14)

Corequisite: Nursing Care of Children Practicum
The course is focused on the nursing process and adaptation model as it relates to the child health. The content includes pathophysiology, nursing implications of diagnostic tests, and related pharmacology. Students will assess patients, identify nursing diagnosis, implement and evaluate nursing interventions to promote adaptive responses in pediatric patients experiencing alternations in physiologic and psychosocial modes.
Lecture classes are strongly augmented by discussion and extensive video and computer program components.

III. COURSE OBJECTIVES
Safe, Effective Care Environment:
1. Examine variables that influence the safety of children.
2. Determine age related anticipatory guidance regarding safety.
3. Distinguish variations of nursing care related to the child.
4. As a member within the discipline of nursing, collaborate with the health care team to facilitate integrated client care including activities related to the ethical and legal issues.
Physiological Integrity:
1. Provide and manage direct care that promotes achievement of physiologic integrity of client needs.
2. Utilize clinical critical thinking skills to provide and direct nursing care appropriate to the maturational development of the child.
Psychosocial Integrity:
1. Demonstrate non-judgemental and caring behaviours when analyzing alterations in parenting and family functioning.
2. Facilitate client adjustment related to changes resulting from illness or injury, or stressful events.
3. Exhibit caring behaviors to facilitate positive parenting skills and coping mechanisms related to developmental issues.
4. Identify and incorporate cultural, religious and spiritual beliefs regarding illness of the child.
Nursing Process
1. Describe adaptations of data collection, analysis, and interpretation of information relative to age-related variations in meeting needs of children.
2. Describe the use of the nursing process as a framework for caring for children and their families in order to meet their individual basic humaeeds.
3. Identify specific standard nursing diagnoses with defining characteristics related to selected needs interferences in children: oxygen, urinary elimination, nutrition and bowel elimination, regulation and sensory perception, activity/mobility, safety/security, self-esteem/body image.
Health Promotion and Maintenance:
1. Utilize critical thinking skills to evaluate aspects of growth and development that intensify he risk for potential health problems and disease.
2. Analyze the status of satisfaction of basic humaeeds in children, based upon analysis of critical indicators.
3. Recognize developmental influences on basic humaeeds.
4. Describe methods to assist children and their families in resolving humaeeds interferences.
IV. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
